Dharma Veda · The Architecture of Human Dignity

समूह-दोष-निषेधः

samūha-doṣa-niṣedhaḥ

Official text Sūkta 4 of 18

Mūla · Original verse

Sanskrit

एकस्य दोषमादाय, समूहं नैव दूषयेत् । व्यक्तौ न्यायः प्रवर्तेत, निर्दोषो मानमर्हति ॥
ekasya doṣam ādāya, samūhaṃ naiva dūṣayet | vyaktau nyāyaḥ pravarteta, nirdoṣo mānam arhati ||
01

Anvaya

Plain English meaning

Do not take one person’s fault and make an entire group guilty. Let justice address the individual; the innocent remain entitled to dignity.

02

Kāvya

Poetic rendering

Collective blame is a torch thrown into a crowded house. It does not find the guilty; it teaches the innocent to fear one another.

03

Manana

Contemplation

Communities may need to reform shared institutions or inherited advantages, but responsibility must be specified. Identity alone is never evidence of culpability.

Prayoga

Civilizational practice

Name the actor, action, policy, and evidence. Never substitute ethnicity, faith, nationality, caste, class, sex, or ancestry for proof.

Param Veda Upaniṣad · One-to-One Bhāṣya

Sit near the question

The companion moves from words and meaning to inward reflection, public application, boundaries against misuse, dialogue, and practice.

Padārtha · Key terms

samūha — group; doṣa — fault; aparādha — offence; vyakti — individual; nirdoṣa — innocent; māna — dignity

Anvaya · Sequence of meaning

Do not take one person’s fault and make an entire group guilty. Let justice address the individual; the innocent remain entitled to dignity.

Bhāṣya · Commentary

Collective blame replaces inquiry with identity. It takes a real deed and spreads its stain across people who did not choose, know, or assist it. This is efficient for mobilisation because it supplies many targets while freeing the accuser from proof; it is disastrous for justice because the innocent learn that conduct cannot protect them.

Loka-saṃgraha · Civilizational application

Public language should name actor, institution, policy, period, evidence, and degree of participation. Structural analysis remains necessary: advantages and harms can be shared through systems. But reform duties must be tied to role, benefit, capacity, and remedy rather than an inherited essence.

Maryādā · Boundary against misuse

The ban on collective guilt does not ban historical truth, institutional accountability, or discussion of group patterns supported by careful data. It bans the leap from pattern to personal culpability and the punishment or degradation of uninvolved people.

Praśna–Uttara

Teacher and student

Questions keep doctrine open to inquiry
Student “Can descendants owe repair for an inherited system?”
Teacher “They may inherit institutions and capacities to repair; they do not inherit personal guilt for acts they did not commit.”
Student “May patterns by group be studied?”
Teacher “Yes, with valid method, context, and refusal to treat probability as proof about an individual.”

Prayoga · Practice

  1. 1 Replace a group accusation with a responsibility map.
  2. 2 Check whether a policy punishes people solely because of identity or kinship.
