A promise allows another person to organise time, risk, labour, and hope around one’s word. That reliance makes commitment morally weighty. Trust grows through ordinary fidelity: arriving, disclosing, completing, and refusing a private gain purchased by another’s unsuspecting dependence.
Loka-saṃgraha · Civilizational application
Organisations should make promises legible: scope, owner, date, limitation, risk, and remedy for breach. Leaders who announce without resourcing train the public to hear every vow as theatre. Early warning is part of keeping faith because it gives others time to protect themselves.
Maryādā · Boundary against misuse
No promise binds a person to cruelty, illegality, or an obligation made without freedom and knowledge. When fulfilment becomes impossible or unjust, integrity requires timely disclosure, negotiation where possible, restitution for reliance, and acceptance of consequence.
